Oliver and Doug remove the old deck. Oliver manages to break the studio window next to my desk. Luckily I was out on the driveway talking to Doug at the time. Annie and Cheryl cleaned up all the shards (thank you) and Oliver has the privilege of creating the "first sign of renovation" my duct-taped window.

The services are run up the driveway and the sewer is re-connected temporarily. We may have to have it unhooked and re-hooked up on a daily basis while the blasting is going on. Olivia doesn't like the idea of using the porta-pottie the workers will. Doug has suggested putting a toilet in the shop and I'm seriously considering it .

I always thought that corner of the house was a little bouncy! New temporary post on the right.

We are the proud owners of our own hydro pole. Ian had the Pole Guy (name unknown) adjust it 4 inches to get it vertical. I'm encouraged that the addition will be more straight than the existing house.

Jan Hoel of Hoel Engineering has completed or storm water management plans and submitted them to the municipality of Saanich. We should have our building permits any day.

Due to popular request, here are some images of the plans.

Saanich is allowing us to fill in the trench even though we still don't have our permits. This will allow the blasting team to get their compressor in-site next tuesday to start drilling.

Foundation blocks under the house to carry the load if we happen to blast out too much rock.

The new main disconnect panel with a new service line all ready to go. Just waiting for hydro to connect the other end. The electricians estimate we'll only be without power for a couple of hours while the re-connect happens.

The drilling begins!
Doug and Oliver have shored up the foundation a few feet back from the blat to make sure the house stays put.

Little digger departs having broken up the upper driveway and filled in the lower part of the driveway.

The tools of the trade. The boys worked hard today, hopefully they're finished drilling tomorrow. They got three points stuck that will get removed tomorrow. They've promised to let me have a go to see what its like, I've promised to buy them a beer if they finish on time.

View out the studio window as they prepare for the first blast. Those are 5,000 lb mats of old tires being placed to contain the blast. We were inside when they blew the charge, quite a thrill!

These blasting mats weigh 2-1/2 tons each (made of old tires and steel cables) they keep the rock from flying.

After the first days blasting. One big pile of rubble.

When I was a boy a few miles out of town there was a big rock we used to ride our bikes to in a farmers field called the "big Rock". Now we have one of our own and the bike ride will be easier.

Mum flushed the toilet right when Doug cut the sewer pipe. How embarassing! We'll never let her forget about it!
